How to detect a hidden camera in hotel room/toilet/changing room/etc?

What should I do? I found a hidden camera in a store changing room.

I guess the question is - what country do you live in. My answer applies only to the United States!

For the most part, the law seeks to ensure that stores are protected by allowing them some security over their merchandise, but without intruding on the privacy of their customers. It is in fact legal for stores to monitor dressing rooms in many states in the United States, but they must do so in a way that does not invade your personal rights. In every state, video monitoring for purposes other than theft prevention is illegal. Many states have taken a middle ground approach, by allowing surveillance, but requiring that the store post conspicuous notices to inform consumers that they are being monitored. Normally in order to be legal, a store must do the following:

1) use same-sex personnel to monitor their customers (women monitor the women's dressing rooms and men monitor men's dressing rooms); and,

2) the security systems need to be 'tapeless', meaning that the person watching through the camera can see what's going on, but can not keep a tape of what they're viewing.

With the advent of security devices on the clothes themselves, stores have been less inclined to look into dressing rooms through cameras.

If you're ever concerned about finding a camera in the dressing room, ASK THE STORE MANAGER to tell you if this is their monitoring system.

If it is, ask them who is monitoring the camera and whether they are keeping tapes. If the store won't disclose its methods, or they seem to be monitoring in a manner that you are uncomfortable with, take your money somewhere else. Losing your business often speaks louder than words.

If it is not the store, they will likely take immediate action to have it removed and put measures in place to make sure it does not happen again.

P. S. - If it is the store's policy, in addition to taking my business elsewhere, I would be sure to accidentally mention it to the media.

Again, my answer only applies to the US, if you live in another country, then at least talk to the store manager to make sure they are aware of the monitoring and if they are doing it, the basic laws of economics apply anywhere in the world, and losing business speaks loudly!

Why is it that she/he would be regarded as far more sinister if he placed this hidden camera where the women change rather than where the men change? What is the basis for this disparity?

First place to look would be the showers/inside the cubicles, probably on the roof. and you do realize that almost all of those porn videos are fake and people are being paid for it?

There is a very little chance that it's happening, and if it does happen, they can get into a lot of trouble with the police, and you can sue them for very large amounts of money.

Of course it is illegal, and of course they do not do that. There can be cameras in areas where people are not likely to be naked (common areas), but there can be nothing where the people change.
